5 Steps to Building an Awesome and Engaged Tribe

It’s fairly straightforward to follow some internet “hacks” to build a following or if you’re really lazy just buy one but it’s much harder to build a tribe who love what you do and actually want to buy from you.

When it comes to building an engaged tribe it’s not about how many overall followers you have. It’s about how many conversations you’re having, how many of those followers are coming back to your content and most important how many are taking that leap from your profile over to your website (and even better signing up to your email list and buying your products and services!).

1) KNOW WHO YOU WANT TO ENGAGE WITH

This seems really obvious but it’s a point a lot of people miss. They make their profile, page or group all about them – their agenda, their life, what they want to push. Whilst yes, you do want to showcase your expertise you also want your audience to know you care about them and what they want.

So, think about who the best people will be to love your products, services and content. Also think about what you think they might want to see from you. Over time you’ll be able to ask them these questions and do surveys so that you can get to know them better but for now a rough idea will be a great place to start.

2) HAVE SOMETHING INTERESTING TO SAY

There is a lot of unoriginal and fairly bland content out there about almost every industry. Whilst I don’t recommend faking an opinion or tone of voice just for the sake of it, I do think it’s important to stand out in your own unique way.

Think about ways you could showcase a different take on a piece of industry news, a different way to talk about a common issue people in your niche face or simply adding your own words and phrases to your posts e.g. I say really A LOT, I use capitals and emojis all the time and if a post doesn’t have at least one exclamation mark in then there is no way it was written by me!!

3) BE HELPFUL, SHARE AND ENGAGE WITH OTHERS

Simply posting content isn’t enough, no matter how beautiful, witty or intellectual it may be. If you really want to grow your tribe then you need to step off your island and start engaging with others!

Share your thoughts on posts your ideal tribe have shared and engage with others in your industry who are putting out content your audience would find interesting. Be the super helpful person that everyone loves and trusts to be on their side.

4) DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK

As new business owners (and particularly as women), we’re often afraid to ask our tribe what they want, ask our existing network if they want to follow us elsewhere or approach new people to share our message or help us along the way.

However, being brave and reaching out and engaging with others is the best way to grow rapidly. Especially if you can find ways to partner up with other complementary businesses.

5) FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS

If you’re still on you or own or you’ve just hired a VA for a couple of hours a month, chances are you don’t have a ton of time to be building a following on every single social media platform.

If this is you then it’s vital for you to get focused and fast! Double down on one or two places so that you can be more present, super helpful and become an influencer there. The more focused you are, the more rapidly your tribe will grow and also, they’ll feel more supported!

It takes to build up an engaged tribe who really know, like and trust but following these 5 steps will certainly help you get there faster.
